After a very looooooooong time, pulled out some time to start the scribbling.
I believe we left the discussion related to SCM tools.
Though worked on four different SCM tools (Clearcase, VSS, CVS, Perforce), i felt like writing the experiences about these.....
CVS - The first SCM tool i have used when i was not aware of the concept of SCM.
This tool is very easy to use (No VOBs or Jazzy stuff).
Recently got the opportunity of doing administration as well and it is pretty good.
I feel there are so many features which normally go unused due to the limited knowledge available around. (Checkout the Subversion). Also check CVS on Web as well.
Clearcase - No words to describe, very good tool if you have multisite!!!!!
Amazing tool from Rational (IBM now).
I like the tool for the XTree which is too good to see your entire tree..... I have very little knowledge when it comes to the Windows (Most of the work were done on Solaris).
Perforce - Very handy and there are no VOBs and it is quite intutive to work.
Since we were using this tool on Linux without XServers, was not able to explore much on this tool.
VSS - Tool from Microsoft. If the project is small and doesn't have a multisite access. Very easy to learn........
Let me see about penning the experiences particularly problems faced and how it was rectified/patched :o)

First Day @ PTC
Wow....
Still i remember that day (16th August 1999).
For the first time, travelling in a train for more than 20 hours and crossed Bangalore also.
Till that time, Bangalore was the north most place i visited!
CAD RM welcomed us aboard and the joining formalities was over by 11 in the morning and there was a short introduction about the CADDS5 product.
All the concepts and Q&A's went over my head. I was not able to understand as it is not my field of study (Explicit/Parametric/Othogonal etc.,)
After Lunch i was asked to meet a manager from PDM/PLM solutions.
He gave a short intro and asked me, "do you know UNIX"?
The answer was "Yes with most of the sound not coming out of my mouth".
He asked me, you can go and use the system in that Cubicle.
Later i found the "atharna" which was with me for 4.5 years.
The one good thing we had here is naming the Systems like ajinkya, atharna... etc.,
Felt like calling your friend / one nearer to you.....
Atharna is a Solaris Box which i saw for the first time in my life......
I can't pen down the reaction which i had when i saw a 21 inches monitor and Solaris/Sparc machine.
This machine has helped me learn lot of things in Unix, Solaris in Particular.
I became very nostalgic, hence planning to sleep to rewind all those happenings which are very near to my heart....
So, till i wake up...... byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

1998 - 99 Years of Transformation
To start with, lemme recollect my memories of doing programming atleast 7 years back!
I was in a place called DCRCI, Infantry Road, Bangalore doing an Instrumentation project for a Stuttgart company....
The tool we used is called LabWindows which was absolutely new to me...
LabWindows is a great tool to express your UI in terms of Components like Pressure Gauge/Thermometer or anyother thing. I believe i have explored only this feature.
Apart from this, learnt the first steps in the SCM where i was using CVS as the CM tool.
I believe one has to learn from the mistakes only. A similar incidence happened to me during the execution of the project. I forgot to check-in the changes to CVS, unfortunately, there was a virus attack which erased C, C++ programs alone.
Since we were writing C routines, all the changes done by me on that particular day was lost.
From that day onwards, keeping the backup in a secured place / Checking - in the file at the end of the day (making sure that it is not affecting the build).
There are so many learnings happened on the SCM front using ClearCase, Perforce and VSS.
We will see those in the forthcoming postings!!!!!
